Active Release Technique (ART) is a soft tissue system/movement-based massage technique developed and patented by chiropractor P. Michael Leahy. It is used to treat problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves.
Active Release Techniques and Active Release Therapy are most commonly used to treat conditions related to adhesions or scar tissue in overused muscles. and Active Release Therapy practitioners treat muscles shortened and weakened by the build-up of adhesions. The shortening of muscles affects the motion of muscles and joints, and nerves can become compressed. As a result, tissues can suffer from decreased blood supply, pain, and poor mobility.
Many conditions can be treated by Active Release Therapy, including headaches, back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, shin splints, sciatica, TMJ, tendonitis and others. ART is a treatment of choice for competitive athletes.
